Borneo - The Tropical Paradise
Borneo Tropical Paradise Photo Tour
October, 2010
The third largest island in the world, Borneo is surrounded by the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra in the west, Java to the south, the Sulawesi Island to the east and the Philippines towards the North East. Borneo is shared between Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. The Indonesian part of Borneo is named as Kalimantan while Sabah and Sarawak are the two states of Malaysia that occupy the remainder of the island along with the tiny but rich country of Brunei. At least 15,000 species of flowering plants, 3000 species of trees, over 220 species of terrestrial mammals, and more than 420 species of birds inhabit this large island making it a biodiversity hotspot in the world.
Toehold's photography tour to this tropical paradise is aimed at maximum photography opportunities with experienced guides and naturalists. We are looking at a small team of photography enthusiasts interested in exploring the 150million year old rain forests of Borneo.
Our destinations in Borneo:
1. Bako National Park
Established in 1957, Bako is one of the smallest national parks in Sarawak but probably one of the most interesting. Abundant wildlife, trekking trails, astonishing plant life, jungle streams, waterfalls, secluded beaches and amazing rainforest patches make Bako one of the most sought after destinations in Sarawak. The Proboscis monkeys endemic to Borneo are Bako's most famous residents making it one of the best places to sight and observe these agile and athletic monkeys in various habitats like beach vegetation, cliff vegetation, heath forest, mangrove forest, mixed dipterocarp forest, Padang or grasslands vegetation and peat swamp forest.
2. Gomantong Caves
Gomantong Caves is an intricate system of caves inside the Gomantong Hill, which itself is the largest limestone outcrop in the Lower Kinabatangan area. The area and its surrounding are a protected area for wildlife, especially orangutans. The cave system is home to a massive population of cockroaches and bats. You can also see crested serpent eagles, kingfishers and Asian fairy bluebirds. The entire access is in the form of a wooden walkway circuiting the interior.
3. Sepilok Sanctuary
A trip to Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary offers you a glimpse of the life of the famed Orang Utans found only in Borneo and on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. A visit to this sanctuary is a rare opportunity to see the lives of these endangered species. You will also get a chance to see Pig Tailed and Long Tailed Macaques, who have learned that there is a very easy meal available at Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary, Sandakan, every day!
4. Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary
The Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary lies within the vast flood plain of the Kinabatangan River - one of the longest rivers in Malaysia. The Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary is part of an important network of conservation areas in the lowlands of eastern Sabah. Together with existing Forest Reserves, a natural corridor of natural vegetation links the lower tidal reaches of the river to the endless Forest Estates in the upper catchment of the Kinabatangan river. With a rich array of unique habitats, a diverse wildlife fauna and a rich culture and history of the Orang Sungai (in Malay, river people): the Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary is by far the most fascinating of natural protected areas in Sabah. Visiting this area can be the most amazing experience for any nature lover.
5. Danum Valley Conservation Area
Danum Valley is about 70 kilometers (44 miles) west of Lahad Datu, Sabah. It spans 438 square kilometers (170 square miles) making it the largest remaining area of virgin undisturbed lowland rainforest in Malaysia. Known as the world's most complex ecosystems, Danum valley lies within the upper reaches of Sabah's second largest river - the Segama. The area is quite hilly but not mountainous. Popular for its Clouded Leopard and Orangutan sightings, Danum also boasts about rare and endangered species like the Sumatran Rhino and the Pigmy elephants that live here.
Please note: though this is intended to be a tour with photography perspective, Non-photographers are also welcome.

- Day 2: Established in 1957, Bako is one of the smallest national parks in Sarawak but probably one of the most interesting. We explore various trails at Bako and also have our share of the beach fun and games over here. We may drive to a place where we would find hardly anyone else.
- Day 3: After a short morning shoot during the low tide, we pack our bags and rush back to the Kuching Airport. We travel for most of that afternoon while we change two domestic flights to land at the Sabah state of Borneo in the Sandakan city. We are accommodated at a resort closer to the Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre.
- Day 4: Sepilok Nature Pick up from Sepilok Nature Resort and transfer to the Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre for a video show. Continue to Sandakan jetty for 2.5 hours boat journey to the Lodge along Sabah's longest river, Kinabatangan with opportunities to view birds and wildlife in virgin mangrove, wetland and rainforest habitats. Late afternoon take a river cruise using electric motor in search of some of the 10 primate species. In the evening a slide show and if weather permits we go spotlighting to view some of the nocturnal animals. Overnight at Borneo Rainforest Lodge. (BLD)
- Day 8: At the Danum Valley - we have no schedules to follow and no Safaris to take. We mostly explore the dense jungles over foot. Though not too much of bird photography is possible here due to the height of the trees, we shall surely spend a lot of time identifying some of Borneo's endemics while we are treated with the resident Orangutans of the area. Wearing Leech Socks - we wade through the leech infested undergrowth hearing constant Gibbons call at the top of the canopy. Macro photography buffs can be treated with a lot of interesting subjects over here. We split in small groups and explore all trails of the Danum valley.
- Day 9: Fit and enthusiastic participants can get up early to hike the small hill overseeing the Borneo Rainforest Lodge where we catch the sunrise followed by a fun session at the natural water pool called the Jacuzzi Pool. The evening is spent tracking the Red-leaf monkeys and the Orangutans. We are encouraged to do night walks over here where we can photograph various night creatures like the Civets and other interesting creatures like the Rhinoceros Beetle. Participants need to understand that we are in a rain forest and rain is inevitable on most days. So be prepared to get wet and wild!
- Day 10: We have a short morning session at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge area after which we are transferred to the tiny Lahad Datu airport from where we fly to Kota Kinabalu, to catch our international flight back to Bangalore.
