The Great Migration - Kenya
The Great Migration - Kenya
Sep 4th - 12th, 2010
The Wildebeest and Zebra migration between Tanzania's Serengeti National Park and Kenya's Masai Mara is perhaps one of the greatest natural history spectacles of our planet. Every year thousands of Wildebeest and Zebra along with Thomson gazelles travel in search of greener pastures. During July/August and September, Kenya's Masai Mara National Park is arguably the best wildlife destination in the world. Lions, Leopards, Cheetahs and numerous other wildlife concentrate near the migration corridor where the mega herds of wildebeest and zebra cross the legendary Mara river. Our photography tour to this heaven is aimed at maximum opportunities to convert wildlife sightings in to memorable frames. That's why the tour will be led by an experienced photographer who has been photographing the migration for the past several seasons. Not to mention while we are here we have a great chance to witness the wildebeest crossing the river and the hungry crocodiles displaying their hunting skills. We promise to make it special for you over here!
While we learn about the fantastic natural history of the African Savannah, we also concentrate on the photography topics that is good to be revised while we set out to our expedition. Luxurious stay doubled with delicious food is only supplement to non-stop action on the field. Masai Mara is a large park and we have chosen hotels that are closer to the Mara River where the influx of the herbivores get out of Serengeti into Masai Mara.
Please note: though this is intended to be a tour with photography perspective, Non-photographers are also welcome.

The whole day shall be used to track the migration and take strategic positions near the mara river anticipating the river crossing.
- September 6, 2010: Since photography is our aim of the trip, we make it a point to focus on one particular species on every outing while we always keep an eye on the river for the river crossing which can happen any time without notice. Migration witnessing needs a lot of time and patience and hence we spend the whole day tracking the herds around the river. Be prepared to take a nap around the river watching basking crocodiles and raging hippos.
- September 7, 2010: Lodged very close to the Ololoolo Escarpment, wildlife is abundant around here. Spending a twelve hour field day seems like an hour when we are on the field. We choose different crossing points and wait for our chance to witness the migration while the crocs feast on the seasonal food.
- September 8, 2010: Loads of Lions are seen around this area as food is plenty. We may spend some time with a pride hoping to glimpse courting couples mate or young cubs play fight. We have the whole day at our mercy only to be accompanied by the surprise rains that the Lake Victoria brings for us.
- September 9, 2010: On this day, we check out of our lodge after breakfast and begin our game drive. We are shifting camps on this day and we arrive at our lodge on the other side of Mara. We are at a considerable distance from the Mara River over here. This part of Masai Mara will give us a variety of sightings along with good chances of Leopards and cheetahs.
- September 10, 2010: On our penultimate day, we explore every possible corners of the park around the Keekorok area. We do visit the sand river and end our day not before our last supper of the trip.
