Gujarat Wildlife Photography Boot Camp / Tour
Gujarat Wildlife Photography Tour
Dec 13th - Dec 21st, 2010
The wildlife of Gujarat is at its best during the winter especially when loads of migratory birds arrive at the Rann of Kutch. Toehold's acclaimed photographers are going to guide budding wildlife photography enthusiasts on this boot camp.
Situated in the northwestern part of India and bordering Pakistan and the Indian states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, Gujarat is an excellent bird photography destination in India. From the deserts of the Rann of Kutch which spread across the Banni grasslands much of northern Gujarat is a wasteland which attracts a wide variety of wintering birds to the thorn scrub and great stretches of seasonal wetlands. Along with this we have the 1660 km coastline on the Arabian Sea.
Our Destination Kutch:
Kutch covers an area of 45,612 sq. km. and is part of the Kathiawar Peninsula occupying the northwestern part of Gujarat. Kutch consists of deserts, dry salty alluvial mudflats, extensive grasslands and great stretches of water left by the monsoons. Kutch can be divided into 4 distinct regions: (i) The deserts of the Great Rann, to the north, (ii) The Grasslands of Banni, (iii) Mainland, consisting of plains, hills and dry river beds and (iv) Coastline along the Arabian Sea in the south with mangrove creeks to the west .
The Kutch area supports around 370 bird species and is particularly rich in raptors, waterfowl, waders and larks. Specialties include the Grey Hypocolius (Kutch is the only known wintering site in India), White-naped Tit, Stoliczka's Bushchat, Sykes's Nightjar, Greater Hoopoe Lark, Merlin, McQueen's and Indian Bustards. Over 30,000 Common Cranes, hundreds of Steppe Eagle, Marsh, Pallid and Montague's Harriers, Long-legged Buzzards, Sandgrouse, Pelicans, Flamingos and great flocks of Greater Short-toed Larks are a feature of any winter visit to the area.
Please note: though this is intended to be a tour with photography perspective, Non-photographers are also welcome.

Giri Cavale
'Born in Bangalore but reborn again in the wild', captures the essence of Giri's obsessive passion for nature and its pictorial documenting. His camera and his artistic eye are always on the look out for a momentous picture and, of course, the perfect shot. He has explored some of India's most enthralling ecosystems across various seasons with the simple objective of seeing and photographing nature up close in its pristine purity. He readily admits that two precious 'colleagues' - luck and patience - have always accompanied him on his expeditions into the wild, yielding some very fine photographic moments and equally wonderful memories.
People believe where there is Giri, there is a cat in the wild. Many of our clients are specific about being guided by Giri in the wild which they believe is a toehold for their wild hunt. Giri Cavale is a nature devotee whose guiding philosophy is 'too much is never enough'.
- 13th Dec: On arrival at Ahmedabad, we group together and depart for Dasada, the gateway to the Little Rann of Kutch. A little over two hours from now, we will arrive at the Rann Riders Resort. This eco-friendly resort is the best that LRK has to offer, be it for its food or the warm comfy beds you will enjoy during this winter season or the amazing culture experience they provide. That night we gather for our first camp fire meeting while we discuss and strategize our trip.
- 14th - 16th Dec: The next morning after an early, simple breakfast . We depart on our first cross-desert open jeep safari across the Little Rann Of Kutch.
It will be very cold & we advice you to carry sufficient winter wear. The Rann is best described as a place where you can only see brown land till the eye meets the horizon. This vast wonderful land is teeming with wildlife.
The morning safari lasts a good three and a half hours, and we return to the resort for a hearty lunch. After lunch, we gather for a quick discussion on the afternoon game plan. We set out on the afternoon drive in the park every evening by 3 PM and return to our lodges just after sunset. The flagship species of LRK is the Asiatic Wild Ass. We will try our hand at capturing silhouette shots of the same with the setting sun in the background. During the monsoon the Rann is submerged in water. By November water resides to form small puddles of water across open plain land. This attracts plenty of birds, especially waders which are attracted to these puddles.
Every evening, we spend at least an hour before dinner interacting with the group, understanding one or the other topic of photography. This is when we would review photographs, discuss learning's and celebrate our day.
This will be the routine we follow at LRK till the time we depart for GRK. - 17th - 21st Dec: After spending 3 full days exploring the Little Rann of Kutch. We depart on the second league of our journey, to the greater part of the salt plains, the Great Rann Of Kutch. After breakfast we depart from the Rann Riders Resort and begin a 6 hour drive to arrive at Nakhtrana, the Gateway to the Great Rann. Immediately after lunch we go on a safari and begin our adventure in the Great Rann. This area supports the one of the world's largest breeding colonies of the greater and lesser flamingos.
Over the next few days we will spend the entire day exploring and capturing the immense beauty and amazing wildlife this area has to offer. - 21st Dec: Our final morning safari at the Great Rann arrives, by now we will know where to go exactly in order to capture the subjects we want. We return to resort by 10am and will soon proceed to the Bhuj airport where we finally board flight's and proceed home with great memories and hard disk's filled to the brim with great photographs.
