Yala Wildlife Photo Tour
Nov 24nd to 28th, 2010
Yala National Park situated in the southeast region of Sri Lanka, is the second largest and most visited national park in Sri Lanka. Yala has the highest density of leopards in the world and it is the most sought after place to see the leopards in its natural habitat. It is also home to about 215 bird species. Being a breakaway piece of the sub-continent, it features similar wildlife population with elephants, wild buffalos, sambar, spotted deer, jackal, sloth bear, etc. among other occupants of the park.
Yala is an interesting and most favoured destination especially for Leopard photography with these mammals not being as elusive as in other parts of the world. With leopards walking the jeep tracks and being used to human and vehicle presence often come in close proximity providing some excellent photography opportunities.
The terrain is interesting with moist monsoon forests to wetlands, marine and freshwater and some rocky outcrops.
If you are big fan of the cats, you cannot afford to miss this picturesque Yala National Park.
Please note: though this is intended to be a tour with photography perspective, Non-photographers are also welcome.

- November 24th: November is bang in the middle of a unique season in Yala, as its leopards are known to have cubs during this time. Participants leave Chennai on the 8:55am flight and after arriving at Colombo, you will be greeted by our local representative and begin a 6 hour long journey to finally arrive at Yala, a luxury eco-resort bordering the Yala Wildlife Sanctuary and the Indian Ocean. We will get to know each other over dinner and discuss the next morning's plan before finally retiring for the night.
- November 25th: The gates at Yala open with the first rays of sunlight. Hoping to be one of the first few to enter the park in order to track leopard activity based on the pug marks, we will arrive very early at the gate before sun rise. Our first safari is aimed at understanding the park, its rules, its routes etc. At the same time and if luck favors have a glimpse of the vast array of exciting wildlife that Yala has to offer. The main focus of this tour is to photograph the Leopard & our guides are handpicked so as we have maximum chance to sight one. We arrive back at the lodge and after lunch, we gather for a quick discussion on the afternoon game plan. We set out for the afternoon drive in the park every day by 2:30 PM and return to our lodges by sun set. Every evening, we spend at least an hour before dinner interacting with the group. This is when we would review photographs, discuss learning's and celebrate our day.
- November 26th – 27th: Our routine while at Yala is going to be very similar every day except that our luck is unpredictable. Hence, everyday is guaranteed to be different, with more and more exciting sightings assured. By the end of 27th November, we would have done atleast six safaris inside Yala.
- November 28th: All good things come to an end !!!...And its time to bid adieu to beautiful Yala. After breakfast we will return on the 6 hour long drive back to Columbo , and board flight's to various destinations marking an end to the Toehold Yala Wildlife Tour .
