Toehold Develop – The Post-processing Weekly Contest: Oct 21 – 27, 2018
(If you haven’t noticed yet, you can mouse-over the image above and look at the ‘before’ and ‘after’ versions.)
Here’s a fun new contest!
The Toehold Post-processing Contest is here to test your processing skills. Every week, we present you with a raw image shot by one of our ace photographers so that you can show your processing skills by participating, sharing your views and learning from our Mentors at the end of it all.
In the fourth week of the contest, we present an image of a temple in Cambodia by Jayanth Sharma.
“I created this perspective in Cambodia on a previous trip, employing an ultra-wide angle fish-eye lens. Unfortunately, the wide angle of view also entailed running into dynamic range limitations of the camera, particularly in bright light. So the challenge in processing this image is to remedy, if not completely overcome, those limitations, and restore a wider gamut of brightness values and colours in the image through smart post-processing.” – Jayanth Sharma
Jayanth also corrected the fisheye perspective to rectilinear in order to enhance the appearance of wideness as can be seen in the ‘after’ image, and contestants may want to replicate that as well in their entries.
Once you fill the form, you’ll get access to download a raw file very similar to the one shown here. For obvious reasons, it is not the exact same photo bearing Jayanth’s copyright watermark, but is from the same series of images. You have Jayanth’s permission to download and work on the .NEF raw file to show your processing skills.
Here’s what you need to do:
- Download the raw file by filling the form below
- Refer to the featured image of this post
- Replicate the result or better it using Adobe Lightroom or any other equivalent post-processing software. You can make this image as optimized and enhanced as possible without letting it look garish.
- Post your processed picture on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter with the hashtags #ToeholdDevelop and #Cambodia
- Please credit the photographer (this week, it’s Jayanth Sharma)
- Please credit yourself for editing the picture
This week’s Contest is open until 17:00 hrs, 27 October 2018, Saturday.
The best-processed photograph will fetch the photographer a free Canvas Print of 24 X 36 inches width of any of their photographs they want to get printed with the world-class HP Z9 Large Format Printer.
The winner will be announced on or before Tuesday, 30 October 2018.
Participate now and earn yourself a world-class print of your favourite image! Please enter your details below, and we’ll email you the link at which you can download the raw file!
Update: 30 October 2018
The winner of last week’s Toehold Develop Post-Processing Contest is here! This lovely rendition of Jayanth’s image is processed by Anoop Balan. The Moderators particularly appreciated how interestingly the image has been cropped to bring more attention to the subject; how the distortion has been fixed; and how the colour, highlights and shadows have been maintained well.
Congratulations to Mr. Balan! He wins a 36×24-inch print of any of his images, absolutely free!
