Toehold Develop – The Post-processing Weekly Contest: Jan 6-12, 2019
(If you haven’t noticed yet, you can mouse-over the image above and look at the ‘before’ and ‘after’ versions.)
Here’s a fun new contest!
The Toehold Post-processing Contest is here to test your processing skills. Every week, we present you with a raw image shot by one of our ace photographers so that you can show your processing skills by participating, sharing your views and learning from our Mentors at the end of it all.
In the fifteenth week of the contest, we present a Giraffe image by Santosh Saligram.
“Giraffes are a joy to photograph, but their exceptional height often means the background is the sky. I photographed this giraffe one afternoon in Tanzania, and owing to the brightness of the sky, the giraffe was rendered underexposed and featureless. Since I didn’t want a silhouette on this occasion, I let it be underexposed, fully confident that the superior shadow detail of the Nikon D850’s NEFs would allow me to restore balance to the image and being the giraffe to life later.” – Santosh Saligram
Once you fill the form, you’ll get access to download a raw file very similar to the one shown here. For obvious reasons, it is not the exact same photo bearing Santosh’s copyright watermark, but is from the same series of images. You have Santosh’s permission to download and work on the .NEF raw file to show your processing skills.
Here’s what you need to do:
- Download the raw file by filling the form below
- Refer to the featured image of this post
- Replicate the result or better it using Adobe Lightroom or any other equivalent post-processing software. You can make this image as optimized and enhanced as possible without letting it look garish.
- Post your processed picture on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter with the hashtags #ToeholdDevelop and #Tanzania
- Please credit the photographer (this week, it’s Santosh Saligram)
- Please credit yourself for editing the picture
This week’s Contest is open until 17:00 hrs, 12 January 2019, Saturday.
The best-processed photograph will fetch the photographer a free Canvas Print of 24 X 36 inches width of any of their photographs they want to get printed with the world-class HP Z9 Large Format Printer.
The winner will be announced on or before Tuesday, 15 January 2019.
Participate now and earn yourself a world-class print of your favourite image! Please enter your details below, and we’ll email you the link at which you can download the raw file!
Update: 15 January 2019
The winner of last week’s Toehold Develop Post-Processing Contest is here! This subtle and tasteful rendition of Santosh’s image is processed by Vinod Kulkarni! The Moderators appreciated how the exposure has been colour-corrected without the sky being blown out and all the colours in the entire image look natural.
Congratulations to Mr. Kulkarni! He wins a 36×24-inch print of any of his images, absolutely free!
