Toehold Develop – The Post-processing Weekly Contest: 30 December, 2018 – 5 January, 2019
(If you haven’t noticed yet, you can mouse-over the image above and look at the ‘before’ and ‘after’ versions.)
Here’s a fun new contest!
The Toehold Post-processing Contest is here to test your processing skills. Every week, we present you with a raw image shot by one of our ace photographers so that you can show your processing skills by participating, sharing your views and learning from our Mentors at the end of it all.
In the fourteenth week of the contest, we present a Kurile Lake image by Santosh Saligram.
“Kurile Lake is a caldera and crater lake in Kamchatka, Russia. When I reached Kurile Lake, unfortunately the weather was very beset by heavy weather which played havoc with the dynamic range. The over cast skies left the foreground underexposed and the colours looking too blue. Using various handy tools in Lightroom I was able to recover much of the shadow detail and the colours in the scene without letting the sky be overexposed.” – Santosh Saligram
Once you fill the form, you’ll get access to download a raw file very similar to the one shown here. For obvious reasons, it is not the exact same photo bearing Santosh’s copyright watermark, but is from the same series of images. You have Santosh’s permission to download and work on the .NEF raw file to show your processing skills.
Here’s what you need to do:
- Download the raw file by filling the form below
- Refer to the featured image of this post
- Replicate the result or better it using Adobe Lightroom or any other equivalent post-processing software. You can make this image as optimized and enhanced as possible without letting it look garish.
- Post your processed picture on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter with the hashtags #ToeholdDevelop and #Kamchatka
- Please credit the photographer (this week, it’s Santosh Saligram)
- Please credit yourself for editing the picture
This week’s Contest is open until 17:00 hrs, 5 January 2019, Saturday.
The best-processed photograph will fetch the photographer a free Canvas Print of 24 X 36 inches width of any of their photographs they want to get printed with the world-class HP Z9 Large Format Printer.
The winner will be announced on or before Tuesday, 8 January 2019.
Participate now and earn yourself a world-class print of your favourite image! Please enter your details below, and we’ll email you the link at which you can download the raw file!
Update: 8 January 2019
The winner of last week’s Toehold Develop Post-Processing Contest is here! This subtle and tasteful rendition of Santosh’s image is processed by Anand C! The Moderators appreciated how the image is colour corrected, maximized the dynamic range while exposing the foreground well and not blowing out the sky.
Congratulations to Mr. Anand! He wins a 36×24-inch print of any of his images, absolutely free!
