Hadada ibis (Bostrychia hagedash)
Great place to see the Hadada ibis: Kenya, Africa
Of the many living wonders that dwell in the wilderness of Kenya in Africa, the hadada ibis is a bird that can kindle your interest by its insouciant beauty. Do not miss the probability of seeing and photographing it on our next Photo Tour to Kenya!
The hadada ibis is native to Sub-Saharan Africa, and is a large bird. Of all the ibises, this is a grey to mild-brown in colour. It has a moustache – the narrow, white and almost-horizontal strip across its cheeks! This grey bird has a beautiful purplish lustre to its plumage over its wings, which when captured in good light can look calmly radiant.
The name of this ibis is derived from the distinct and loud call it makes — ‘haa-haa-haa-de-dah’. It feeds chiefly on earthworms, larger insects, spiders and small lizards, and is evaluated on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as Least Concern.
This week, we’re quite digressing from our usual way of declaring our Animal of the Week for particular outstanding reason. Today, the hadada ibis is our Animal of the Week for no better reason than simply being itself!
