Have you given your child the power to see their future with their own lens?

As with a bird after a worm, an early exposure to a varied array of skills and experiences can be crucial in your child's quest for their life's love. At the very least, a new skill can develop into a hobby, engaging your child's interest, stimulating their cognition, stoking their creativity and even paving the way for a future of verve and creativity.

At Toehold, the importance of this is not lost on us. Hence we bring to you the Young Photographer Workshop for children in the age group of 8 to 16, specially crafted for growing minds.

Starting with the basics of digital photography and camera handling, this Workshop will go beyond technicalities. It will train your child's creative eye to picture the myriad riches in the world, and arm them with the power of self-expression.

What's better, far removed from the pedantic banality of school, this Workshop embodies fun and interaction in a milieu of informality and creativity as its existential principles, and will be held in the lap of nature!

Mentoring them will be an expert photographer, who, patient, warm, humorous and full of beans, will make learning an experience to savour rather than scamper to eschew. There will be ample individual attention lavished on each child, and all their questions addressed.

Spread over two days, this Workshop, which includes a one-night stay at the Camp, is set in surroundings straight out of a story book, and will include plenty of practical exercises in the great outdoors.

Gift your child this Workshop, so they may paint their way with light to a picturesque future.

  •   DAY 1

We assemble at the pickup point in Bangalore at 8 a.m, and once all children have gathered, we'll depart in pre-arranged transport for the hour-long journey to The Outback Farm and Homestay in Bannerghatta, your child's best ever classroom. On reaching the gorgeous campsite, we will be welcomed with a refreshing drink.

After a brief introduction and ice-breaking session, the workshop will officially commence. Phillip will hold a session introducing digital photography to help your child understand basics such as camera formats, resolution ('megapixels'), the camera body, lenses, focal length and camera accessories.

Once we have a good grasp of the basics, Phillip will introduce the core aspect of photography — EXPOSURE. We'll briefly discuss the exposure triangle and exposure program modes before we give in to the smells from the kitchen and gorge on a delicious lunch.

After lunch, Phillip will help your child master aperture, shutter speed, ISO sensitivity and exposure compensation using the various program modes such as manual, aperture priority and shutter priority. Your child will certainly end this session with a better grasp of these concepts and feel more confident with their camera.

Then it's practice time! Phillip will lead the children on a beautiful trek to a nearby hill to practice what they've learnt so far during the workshop. The top of the hill is a perfect place to try out exposure compensation and metering and also presents a great opportunity to take stunning landscape photographs. If we are very lucky, we could come across some wildlife, too.

We'll then return to the campsite and relax by the lake while enjoying a snack and a hot beverage.

After freshening up, your child will be taught how to master photographing in the dark with a fun session on low-light and night photography. Your child will love learning about light painting using the bulb mode, and if the sky is clear, they will also learn star-trail photography.

Over a scrumptious dinner, we will celebrate the fact that your child can now look through their camera's viewfinder with considerably more experience than before.

Just before bedtime, we'll gather around the campfire and Phillip will show your child some of his finest images and talk to them about composition, thus ending a fun-filled day of learning about photography.

  •   DAY 2

We awake to the sweet calls of the birds found within the campsite and walk out of our rooms to watch the mist rising over the lake and the sun rays lighting up the surrounding forests.

It's back to photography! Phillip will first bring everyone up to speed by summarising the previous day's lessons before turning to all there is to know about focussing, which will include instruction on manual focus, autofocus, autofocus points and focus modes.

After a hearty breakfast, it's time for a topic that everyone finds quite fascinating — depth of field. Your child will learn about the various aspects that influence depth of field and learn how to create images with a shallow or deep fields.

As the Workshop winds to a close, Phillip will help your child understand sharpness, image stabilization, white balance, using filters, best practices of photography, cleaning and maintenance and how to choose equipment.

Finally, the immersive Workshop will end with a fun photography game and competition.

Everyone's doubts will be cleared with a question-and-answer session over lunch and then we'll check out and leave in pre-arranged transport and return to the city as proud young photographers.
