E This is a Toehold Special Tournter a melting pot of various elements of human history, and speak to it in a language of no words. For a conversation with your soul, come to Cambodia.

How is it?

Cambodia lies entirely within the tropics, its low-lying central plain bordered by low mountains and uplands. In its transitional plains, forested elevations are found as the landscape extends outwards. And it is in these geographical changes that you will find some magnificent temples, royal palaces and other ancient architectural marvels by which to be enthralled.

Despite centuries of political turmoil, depredation and horrors of war, this nation stands as yet another testimony to the essence of endurance, a vital spirit of the human condition. Not only is its culture rich in lowland ethnic majority but also in its diverse hill tribes. In its enchanting landscapes, Cambodia has temples and beaches that attract seekers of raw elegance.

Meanwhile, renowned for the Angkor Wat ruins, Siem Reap is a province in which ancient temples exist amidst natural geographical beauty.

Like most Asian countries, Cambodia too comprises centuries of history in its varying terrains. So you may breathe its air, bathe in its light, and return with many memories to fill you travel memoirs.

What you will see and photograph:

Our photographic exploration of Cambodia will begin at Siem Reap. Buddhist monasteries there will make for interesting photography subjects and kindle your vision and imagination, coaxing you gently into making evocative images.

At Banteay Srey and Kampong Kleang, take in all the sounds and colours and smells to the point of intoxication and translate what your senses gather into art.

Dedicated to Shiva, the pink limestone walls containing the best bas reliefs of any temple at Angkor, Banteay Srey will charm you. The wooden houses on tall stilts in Kampong Kleang are a delight to watch. At the Tonlé Sap Lake, floating houses and people's way of living are some amazing details you would want to record as photographs.

The magnificent remains of the Khmer Empire, the Angkor Archaeological Park will be a breathtaking encounter visually, architecturally and artistically. Explore and photograph the hidden temples, temples of Bayon, Baphoun and Terrace of Elephants and The Leper King. Visit the main temple, Angkor Wat, which is arguably the main reason many visit Cambodia.

In the remains of Roluos Group of Temples, the first major capital of the Angkorian-era Empire, visit the Lolei, Preah Ko and Bakong temples. In Bakong temple area, the largest and the most interesting of the Roluos Group of Temples, there is still an active Buddhist monastery.

Explore the jungle-clad temple Ta Prohm, where the atmosphere is hauntingly exotic with overgrown trees whose roots push stubbornly between the huge stone blocks of the temple and still hold them from falling apart. Watch and photograph yet another exquisite sunset at Pre Rup or Srah Sarong.

Now now, what fun if you didn't wander off into some offbeat places in a foreign country! These are the ruins that aren't frequented often — Koh Ker (a beautiful jungle temple) and Beng Mealea (meaning 'lotus pond' in Khmer). Depictions of scenes from the Hindu mythology are carved in these temples and make for some spectacular photographs.

At Toehold, we are passionate about photography just as you are, which lets us understand your travails and needs perfectly. And we use this insight to specially design our Photography Tours so they give you a toehold to excel at the art and set you up for success.

The Toehold team at your disposal will keep you tuned and geared, so you come in empty-handed but go out with bagful of images and tales of an experience that is better lived than heard.

Please note: This Tour begins on Saturday, 2 December 2017, and ends on Thursday, 7 December at Siem Reap. Journey between your hometown and Siem Reap is NOT included in the Tour itinerary or cost. However, all required assistance will be duly provided.

  •   DAY 1   2 December 2017, Saturday: Arrival in Siem Reap by noon. Overnight in Siem Reap

We will be picked up by our driver who will escort us to our hotel in Siem Reap. After check-in we spend the rest of the day at leisure. There will also be an introductory session in which the Skipper will brief the group about the following days of the Photo Tour.
  •   DAY 2   3 December, Sunday: Banteay Srey and Kampong Kleang Village; Overnight in Siem Reap

In the morning, we will visit the remotely located Banteay Srey, an offbeat area that was once a centre of activity of Khmer Rouge. Built in the late 10th century and dedicated to Shiva, Banteay Srey's pink limestone walls contain the best bas reliefs of any temple at the world-famous Angkor.

After lunch, we will be escorted to the Kampong Kleang village where we will photograph the nuanced beauty of the countryside. In the late afternoon, we will be taken to Tonlé Sap lake on a boat, where we will evidence the picturesque view of the floating houses and the local people's way of life. We will then head back to our hotel in Siem Reap to stay there overnight.
  •   DAY 3   4 December, Monday: Angkor

Sprawling across more than 400 square kilometres, The Angkor Archaeological Park stands in all its majesty even though it is nothing more than the remains of the Khmer Empire that reigned between 9 and 15 century. We will see and photograph the hidden temples, and the breathtaking temples of Bayon, Baphoun and Terrace of Elephants and The Leper King.

After lunch, we will visit the artistically and architecturally stunning main temple, Angkor Wat, whose intricate carvings are perhaps one of the best achievements of all of mankind, still demonstrating the incredible skills of the then Khmer builders.
  •   DAY 4   5 December, Tuesday: Roluos Group of Temples

We will be picked up by our driver and guide to visit the Roluos Group of temples after breakfast. Here we will expore the Lolei, Preah Ko and Bakong temples. The sandstone carvings in the niches of the temples are notable, as are the Sanskrit inscriptions on the doorposts, which can be some interesting subjects for photography.

Post lunch, we will explore and photograph Ta Prohm, a magnificent jungle-clad temple. After watching the sun set at Pre Rup (or Srah Sarong based on how we are placed that evening), we will return to the hotel.
  •   DAY 5   6 December, Wednesday: Enchanting Beng Mealea and the Koh Ker Temples

This day we'll go on an offbeat adventure into the seldom-visited ruins of Koh Ker and Beng Mealea. The temples wear carvings extensively depicting scenes from Hindu mythology. We will return to our hotel after walking amongst the ruins, living the memory of what was once celebrated.
  •   DAY 6   7 December, Thursday: Departure from Siem Reap

We will spend the early hours of the day at leisure until our driver transfers us to the Siem Reap Airport, and then take our flights back home with many a memory of a historical place and its always rejoiced beauty.
