A seasonal salt marsh, the Rann – derived from the Hindi word meaning desert – lies sprawled across a massive area on the snout of the Gujarat state lining the Arabian Sea and extends to the neighbouring Sindh province of Pakistan in a glorious sweep. Composed of scrub islets and short grasslands, the Rann, a part of which is even a World Heritage Site, supports a mind-boggling variety of bird life.

Arid as it may seem, the Little Rann of Kutch nurtures a number of birds and mammals through the year, but in December and January, it peaks as an unparalleled hotbed of avian frenzy as migratory birds from all over the world make the Rann their home. Apart from the wildlife, there is the infinite vastness of the Rann. Mirages all around the horizon with hazy shapes of wild animals at at its edge, that take clearer form the closer we get to them, make it a dreamlike experience, unique only to the Rann.
Amongst the birds in the grassland, the most common are the large swarms of greater short-toed larks. The other larks include the Bimaculated-larks, Indian bushlark, Ashy-crowned sparrow lark, Rufous-tailed lark and the greater hoopoe lark. Apart from larks and pipits, the arid grassland also holds the Indian courser, the cream-coloured courser, short-eared owl, the McQueen’s bustard, the common crane, Stolickza’s bushchat and common sandgrouse in good numbers.
The list of raptors include merlin, peregrine falcon, steppe eagle, imperial eagle, tawny eagle, long-legged buzzard, white-eyed buzzard, and several species of harriers. The many water bodies of the Rann are also home to a number of waders, but the thousands of flamingo stand out in bright pink, and the others pale in comparison.
The mammal life is far from left behind. For years, the enduring image of LRK has been an animal that may have less grace than a horse but possesses twice its kick – the Indian wild ass, also called the khur. Classified by the IUCN as ‘endangered’, it has a sanctuary named after it, and is the most ubiquitous and recognizable big mammal of the Little Rann.
The Rann is also home to a number for canids, such as the Indian wolf, the hyena, the Indian desert fox and the Indian fox. Winter is also mating time for the foxes, and early summer is when they are seen denning, with litters of upto four puppies frolicing around the den. The Indian jungle cat and the desert cat are also seen frequently
