Are you someone who is moved by that unutterable joy of watching a storytelling photograph in print? Then this week’s Toecabulary will be that much more joyful for you to read! For we discuss Dots Per Inch (DPI) or Pixels Per Inch (PPI), which is related to print size.

For an image to look sharp, for a display to not tell the difference between two consecutive pixels, for a print to look stunning from far away, the minimum number dots or pixels per inch (please note that pixels and dots are interchangeable in this context) is 300.

How to calculate maximum print-size using DPI (PPI)?

DPI (PPI) = Number of Pixels (image size)/Print Resolution

For any given image size, the large the print, the lower the Pixels Per Inch. In other words, the image size and the PPI are inversely proportional to each other.

For large prints that are seen from far, like you would in a photo gallery, lower DPI will do. However, the image size must be bigger.

These stunning images in our Mumbai Gallery have been printed at 24X36 inches at 200 PPI.
