Kabini Skipper Speaker

At the heart of Wild India, Bandhavgarh National Park has come to be known as one of the best havens of our national animal. It is the tiger capital of the world. Here, the tiger is not merely a wild cat. It is an obsession that resonates in the mind of locals and visitors alike. It is the very spirit of the place, and it lives in every pore of the jungle and every heart that dwells around it.

The tiger in these parts is not a mythical ghost around which stories are woven for vicarious pleasure, but a strikingly real creature that can be watched, observed and enjoyed firsthand, in its natural habitat.

An intoxicating mix of culture and natural history sings a soulful tune in the timeless lands of Bandhavgarh. Set around a haunting 2000-year-old fort believed to have been gifted by lord Ram to his brother Lakshman (leading to the name Bandhavgarh, meaning ‘brother’s fort’), the 437km2 park is as much an archaeological goldmine as an ecological gem.

However, the highlight of a Bandhavgarh wildlife tour with Toehold, is the unparalleled knowledge and expertise our skippers bring to the table. With decades of experience tracking these elusive big cats, you are assured the best possible opportunities to sight and photograph these regal beasts.

For wildlife lovers and enthusiasts we can offer a variety of Bandhavgarh wildlife tour packages to travel and enjoy bandhavgarh. Join us on one of our expert-photographer guided Bandhavgarh photography tours, or join a group tour with like-minded individuals as your fellow-travellers. If you prefer to travel on your own terms, in your style, we can offer you a package in any of the lovely lodges around here keeping in mind the budget, taste and style of travel that fits your needs.

Bandhavgarh National Park & Tiger Reserve

Sal forests and northern India moist deciduous forest home to abundant wildlife.

An undercurrent of magic envelopes as you snake your way through the hallowed alleys of the tourism zone, where the great tigers Charger, Sita, Mirchani and B2 once reigned supreme. Presently you will be smitten by their able descendants, who grace this mythical landscape like beautiful relics left behind by a fantastical kingdom.

Although the iconic tiger is very much the main course in Bandhavgarh, the side dishes are aplenty, with jackals, jungle cats and innumerable species of birds flitting through the forest.

Bamera Badi Gufa
A male tiger referred to as the Bamera male in Bandhavgarh.

What you can expect in a Bandhavgarh wildlife tour package?

In these parts, the day’s calendar revolves around the tiger’s schedule, and life dances to the rhythm of its marauding moods.

The tiger’s beauty is an impossible paradox, a phenomenon more than a physical entity, seemingly existent in a different plane of reality. And that is why, no matter how prepared you are, every time you see a tiger, there is an inevitable buzz of excitement in the air.

Seeing a tiger in the wild has been documented to elicit strong reactions from souls of various travellers – from the weekend picnicker to the academically minded researcher. Some of them lose their voices in awe, while the others gush with joy and exultation, but nobody ever escapes the magic. There is a reason the tiger has been voted the world’s favourite animal.

Your quest through the verdant landscape truly encapsulates the essence of tiger-land. The grasses of the lush meadows, glistening with the sheen of the early morning dew glow with freshness, while the sheltering woods throb with the promise of many a wonder that they keep in their mystical folds.

Bandhavgarh Plateau
A cautious sambar deer in the backdrop of the Bandhavgarh plateau and fort
seshiah
11 meter long statue of Lord Vishnu in the laying position with umbrella of “Shesh Nag” along with the “Shivling” and the “Lord Brahma” are situated here.

Halfway up the eponymous Bandhavgarh fort, an astounding monolithic sculpture of a reclining lord Vishnu oversees the wild affairs unfolding on the lower slopes where the star protagonists play out their everyday roles unwittingly as they live their charmed lives.

Jackals and jungle cats cross paths with pleasing regularity, the now rarefied species of vultures, including the red-headed, long-billed, white-rumped and Egyptian variety, which thrive here, constitute a heartening sight overhead, and a rich variety of other avian life gladdens the keen birder, of which lesser adjutant stork, Malabar pied hornbill, blue-bearded bee-eater and white-rumped shama are notable, and Asian paradise flycatcher and stork-billed kingfisher yield particular delight, while white-eyed buzzard, red junglefowls and honey buzzards are surprisingly common along with the nearly ubiquitous changeable hawk-eagle and crested serpent eagle. Indeed Bandhavgarh is a smorgasbord of the choicest riches.

Top Cat Tryst - Bandhavgarh Full Day Photo Tour Schedules

NOV 18-22, 2020

Full Day Tiger Photography Tour

Skipper: Jayanth Sharma

Tour Itinerary (4N/5D)

Please note: The Tour begins at Bandhavgarh anytime after 12 noon on Day 1, and ends at Bandhavgarh after the breakfast on Day 5 and will include 3 Full Day safaris.

If you will need to stay overnight in Jabalpur (at extra cost) to take the next morning’s flight to Mumbai or Delhi (as per the current flight schedules) please get in touch with us.

Transport to and from Bandhavgarh
Shared (or exclusive, if you prefer) onward and return road transfers will be arranged at extra cost.

Departure 1
: NOV 18-22, 2020

Participants fly to Jabalpur from either Delhi or Mumbai and are transported to Bandhavgarh, in about five hours. After checking in, we are met by the Skipper and get to know one another.

Following a scrumptious dinner and a round of mutual introduction, our Skipper will brief the group on the natural history features and tourist rules of the park and set the tone for the Tour before we retire for the night with exciting dreams of what lies ahead.

Come early morning and it’s time for the much-awaited first safari, during which we acquaint ourselves with the topographical features of the park. A dash of beginner’s luck can yield the coveted sight of a tiger early on the trip, kicking the event off to a rollicking start, but even if feline fortune doesn’t shine through, the beauty of the forest is bound to enthrall us with plenty of time remaining on the Tour to see and photograph the principal object of our pursuit.

Following our maiden foray on this entire day, we return to camp, where the Tour’s first interactive ChaayaaChitra session will ensue. These unique Toehold sessions, which are highly fruitful and great fun, are reported by earlier participants to be as enjoyable as the safaris themselves and are likely to entertain as much as educate you.

Having spent a noteworthy day replete with exploration, photography and frolic, we enjoy a scrumptious supper before hitting the sack for the night.

For the next two days, we follow the same schedule in pursuit of tiger photography opportunities.

After a morning wakeup-call at 04:15. opens the day, we reach the park gate at the earliest possible and be one of the first to enter when it opens. This will allow us to look for pugmarks and other fresh signs of any tiger movement to track the big cats, and also put us in a vantage position for viewing and photography, should a tiger materialize. Tigers are at their most active during the early hours of dawn and late hours of dusk, so we seek to utilize the first hour of the ride to the most.

After lunch inside the park, we continue our safari till evening. Afternoons are great for bird-watching, and while we wait for tigers to start moving or visit the numerous waterholes to counter the summer heat, we have a great time photographing some of the winged attractions of Bandhavgarh. Meanwhile your Skipper will constantly monitor the situation and strategize with the guide and the driver to maximize tiger sighting opportunities.

The full-day safari lasts from dawn-to-dusk, giving us a splendid chance not only to find tigers but also see and photograph many other inhabitants of this Central Indian Eden. We exit the park and return to our comfortable resort for a refreshing shower and a rejuvenating dinner.

After a brief repose, we meet for a session of ChitraTantra, where your Skipper will critique your pictures upon request, sharing valuable tips for improvement. Intriguing and interactive, this discussion is bound to open your eyes to many new things you can try on the rides to come.

Should a tiger encounter materialize, your Skipper will do everything in his strength to put you in the best possible position for viewing and photography.

After enjoying an optional morning safari in Bandhavgarh, we check out of our lodge and are transferred to Jabalpur or Katni, whence we return home with fascinating tales to tell our families and friends!

Please talk to us about your flight and if you are interested in an Adhoc morning safari. Please note, this safari is not included in your cost and depending on how many participants opt for this extension, the safari will be priced appropriately.
