Seven years of making images and Nagendra Mayya is all about redefining existing ways of the art of photography, especially in the genres that are his forte: candid wedding photography and children’s portfolio.
When Mr. Mayya began taking pictures as a hobby, he was more into wildlife and landscape photography, but when he decided to quit his job and take up photography as his profession, he did not want to get carried away by romanticism of the art alone. He wanted to earn a living, and candid wedding photography piqued his interest as he wanted to come up with more creative ways of doing it. Another less-explored genre of photography began to intrigue him: children’s portfolios.
When Nagendra Mayya started wondering if there was any other way then making huge investment on camera equipment to translate his ideas into reality, he stumbled upon Toehold. He was extremely happy to find out that investment wasn’t necessary at all, because he could hire all the equipment he needed for the genres of photography he is into.
“I realised it was better to hire than own camera equipment, it saves me the trouble of investment and maintenance. And I am extremely happy with the delivery-and-pick-up service that Toehold offers because I don’t have to travel half-way across the city in traffic at all. It saves so much of my time. So, as long as Toehold is around, I have nothing to worry about,” says Mr. Mayya and laughs.
When asked about what photography means to him, Mr. Mayya explained, rather humbly: “Photography means different things to different people. I am fascinated by how the art is visualized differently by a photographer and the client he is making images for. To me, photography is a major part of life as it adds meaning to it, and the process of making images is not only creative, but is vital to my very existence.”
Mr. Mayya fondly recollects how his clients have always encouraged him and complimented him whole-heartedly after he completes their assignments. “Putting a smile on their faces is a priceless part of my art,” says he, and continues: “It’s like conjuring up a few invaluable moments of utter joy for me when the bride and the groom and their families are happy about the candid photos I give them a few days after the wedding. They relive those moments and that’s feels special to me in an inexplicable way than it probably does to them.
“And the best part about creating a kid’s portfolio is to see how the parents react to it. Although a few parents have their own cameras and keep shooting pictures of their children, a lot of them want to chronicle their baby’s special moments in studios or specific locations with particular props, and that’s when my perspective to the story gets added. It’s such a privilege, even though in professional terms it is simply about giving that extra, artful edge. This to me, is a dream come true: to make people happy through an art form that I am capable of,” avows Mr. Mayya.
Nagendra Mayya has been creating new boundaries for his art, and his pictures vouch for it. Toehold wishes him the very best; may he bring in more creativity and surprise to the world of candid wedding and children’s portfolio photography. Because, the possibilities in the world of art, at any point in time, are infinite.
